When you look at the app icons on your iPhone Home screen, you will notice that they all are still and look dull. Fingal is a new jailbreak tweak that brings life to your app icons by making them animated.
It is a new form of theming platform for jailbroken iOS devices that lets users try a variety of themes for animating the app icons as you can see below. Just like Winterboard and Anemone, Cydia developers can create their own themes that will be used as an add-on in Fingal.
To get started after installing Fingal, you’ll have to venture into the tweak’s preferences pane available in Settings. This is the place where you can view all the installed themes as well as choose the ones you’d like to apply.

The pane is broken down into two sections, namely Enabled Themes and Disable Themes. When you install Fingal for the first time, it comes with a default theme called Basic Example Theme that is disabled. This theme animates only four of the stock iOS app icons including Messages, Reminders, Settings and Safari.
To enable it, tap and hold on the grabber next to the theme and drag it to the Enabled Themes section. Then press the respring button located in the top right corner of the pane to respring your iPhone and apply the newly selected theme.
As mentioned earlier, you’re not bound to using this theme only. You can download and install third-party themes from Cydia that are made for Fingal and apply them to your iPhone. Since the tweak was recently introduced, there’s a limited amount of themes available. One interesting theme is ShakeIt Plus that is recommended by the developer.
You can install this theme from the ZodTTD repo in Cydia. Once done, go back to the settings pane of Fingal and you will notice a bunch of new themes added by the package that are dedicated to each of the corresponding app icons. You can enable the themes that you’re interested in and perform a respring for the new animations to take effect.
Fingal looks like a promising theming platform for iOS that brings life to your app icons. The animations are very smooth and it doesn’t cause any lags. As for the battery life, it will have a slight impact for sure as the hardware will now have the burden of rendering the app icon animations but nonetheless, the effect will depend on how long you keep the Home screen open.
Best of all, Fingal is available as a free package on Cydia’s BigBoss repo. If you’re going to give it a try, make sure to let us know what you think about it in the comments section.
